Keeping Time, 40"x60"
Keeping Time is a poignant tribute to Jemima Howard, reflecting her strength and endurance during her battle with breast cancer. The piece features birds of prey native to High Park—the screech owl, osprey, red-tailed hawk, and kestrel—escaping from a gilded cage, their flight symbolizing liberation and transcendence. The hand-drawn frame at the edge of the artwork is deliberately broken, further emphasizing the birds’ journey beyond physical constraints.
Red admiral butterflies are woven into the composition, representing transformation and the fleeting nature of life. A working clock hangs from the gilded cage, marking the passage of time and underscoring the theme of waiting and inevitability.
This deeply layered piece intertwines the natural world with human experience, creating a powerful meditation on time, resilience, and release.
